Washington, D.C. Today, government watchdog Accountable.US announced that Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has been identified as an enemy of progress due to his opposition to key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all. The group launched a new campaign, “Enemies of Progress,” outlining the potential threats that Rokita and other Republican attorneys general around the country pose to advancements that support all Americans. Accountable.US also released its first report highlighting how Rokita and others are using their positions as top law enforcement officials to defend their campaign donors, not their constituents.

“Instead of fighting for their best interests, Attorney General Rokita is spending Hoosiers’ taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits against the Biden administration on behalf of his special interest donors,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Rokita has worked to undermine democracy and suppress the voices of voters in his state — so it’s no surprise to see him now try to obstruct progress on initiatives that will improve lives and the economy for his constituents.”

This new campaign exposes some of the worst offenders who have proven to be working towards one goal in their capacity as their state’s top law enforcement official: to slow down or prevent progress on some of the country’s toughest issues. Rokita is joined by another 12 “Enemies of Progress” including the attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and West Virginia. In the coming days, the effort will be amplified with paid ads in key states, including on social media and traditional media websites.

“Poll after poll shows the public supports the Biden agenda, and any obstructionist who would abuse their power to protect profits of greedy special interests is an enemy of progress,” added Herrig.

Here’s more on why Attorney General Rokita was selected as a top “Enemy of Progress”:

  • Suppressed The Right To Vote: Rokita instituted one of the nation’s first voter identification laws, which inspired voter suppression efforts across the country. His defense of the measure led all the way to the Supreme Court and has led to the suppression of tens of thousands of voters across the country because of his efforts and successive states’ imitations.

  • Tried To Undermine 2020 U.S. Election: Rokita signed onto a case in 2020 seeking to overturn the results of the presidential election in states other than Indiana. He then continued even into February 2021 – well after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol – to claim the election had been stolen from Donald Trump and that “left-leaning states” had conducted unconstitutional elections.

  • Made Racist Comments And Ran Campaign Ads That Used Racial Fear: In 2007, Rokita compared Black Americans who voted for Democrats to slaves and defended the intention behind his remarks as “honorable.” In 2018, Rokita faced accusations of racism due to an ad he ran that focused on Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem.
