Senate Republicans Stand Near-Unanimously Against Medicare and Medicaid

WASHINGTON, DC – In case it wasn’t already clear, the Senate’s vote late last night to adopt a budget plan that funds Trump’s agenda firmly shows two contrasting visions for the country:

In Republicans’ plan, billionaire donors and corporations deserve a handout from the government, with massive tax breaks – paid for by everyday Americans and programs that tens of millions rely on.

In contrast, Democrats offered an opportunity to every senator to fulfill their campaign promises to lower costs by protecting and strengthening critical programs millions of Americans rely on, including:

  • Protecting Medicare from funding cuts
  • Ensuring not $1 of Medicaid is cut to fund tax cuts for the ultra-rich
  • Lowering housing costs
  • Blocking cuts to school lunches

And with near unanimity, Senate Republicans voted no – no to YOUR health care, and no to lowering everyday costs.

Senate Republicans also said no to making the ultra-rich pay their fair share. Senate Republicans voted no on tax cuts for the wealthiest people making more than $1 million, $10 million, $100 million, and even $500 million a year. They voted yes on giveaways to big oil and gas and giant Pentagon contractors.

There should be no confusion here: every single Republican Senator had the opportunity to vote for their constituents’ wallets, and health care, and nearly all voted against them. We’re just a few short weeks into Republican control of Washington and they’ve made crystal clear their priority is cutting taxes for their billionaire donors and corporations and they’re going to pay for it by cutting funding for programs millions of Americans rely on.”
