WASHINGTON, D.C. – A day after President Trump declared he wants the U.S. Department of Education shut down “immediately,” the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions held its nomination hearing for Trump’s Education Secretary pick, Linda McMahon, the billionaire wrestling entertainment tycoon with “minimal education experience” and an alleged history of sweeping sexual abuse against young boys under the carpet. McMahon testified she shares the President’s plagiarized Project 2025 vision to “return education to the states” and was “ready to enact” it – stopping short of saying the President has the authority to dismantle the Department unilaterally without approval from Congress. Education policy experts have warned dismantling the Department of Education would be “catastrophic for the millions of students in low-income communities who depend on federal educational services and support” while “civil rights protections against discrimination based on race, gender, and disability would also be gutted.” 

“Linda McMahon puts on quite a show of confidence, but her alleged actions knowing about and mishandling the sexual abuse of children at her corporation should give no one confidence that she would enforce Title IX sex discrimination protections as Education Secretary,” said Accountable.US Executive Director Tony Carrk. “Helping the President abolish the Education Department altogether would further jeopardize discrimination protections against students and billions in federal funding needed to strengthen public schools and support special education programs. Starving cash-strapped states of critical public education resources is a recipe for generational failure. The Trump-McMahon-Project 2025 agenda would leave millions of kids behind and further rig the system against low-income communities. McMahon would be just the latest to join the Trump administration’s billionaire club, which has made no allusions about its plans to let the wealthy cut to the head of the line while working people wait for the scraps.”
