DOGE Weekly Watchdog: Amid Mass Social Security Disruptions Under Musk’s DOGE, House Republicans Block Basic Transparency, Oversight

In recent days, millions of Social Security beneficiaries received erroneous messages that they’re “not receiving payments” amid chronic SSA.gov website outages, causing widespread worry and confusion. Beneficiaries including seniors, survivors and disabled Americans have been denied access to their accounts no thanks to DOGE’s aimless staffing cuts, office closures, service cuts, and wild policy changes. And now Social Security Administration’s workers are warning that DOGE’s actions threaten to send the agency into a “death spiral.”
More and more, it appears that’s been the plan all along for Musk who called Social Security “the big one to eliminate” and who falsely claimed that benefits Americans earned through hard work and paying into the system for decades is the “biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.” For someone who holds contempt for the system that has kept generations of Americans out of poverty and allowed them to retire with dignity, what difference does it make if seniors don’t receive their benefits on time, or at all? The richest man in the world will never need Social Security – or another giant tax break for that matter, but Republicans in Congress took another step forward to give him just that last week, paid for with catastrophic cuts to Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, and food aid for millions of Americans.
Musk’s influence over the White House still looms large, continuing to show up to cabinet meetings despite claims he’d be more focused on his own troubled businesses. These mass Social Security disruptions are emblematic of DOGE’s incompetent and harmful meddling that’s been negatively impacting communities for months. There’s no mystery why Musk’s DOGE is getting more unpopular by the day and igniting protests across the country. That should be Congress’ cue to start demanding more answers about why their constituents are paying the price through economic uncertainty, layoffs, and service disruptions when the Trump-Musk administration has so very little to show for it.
It had the opposite reaction from House Republicans in one key committee last week, who did everything to keep the public in the dark about what DOGE is actually doing. On April 9, Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform unanimously voted to table two resolution requests for information about the DOGE mission: H. Res. 187 and H. Res. 186. Yet one by one, Committee Republicans chose to obstruct basic transparency and oversight of DOGE’s community destruction and Musk’s likely conflicts of interest, raising the question: What are they so desperate to hide?
Members of Congress have another opportunity to step in and demand transparency and ethics requirements for Special Government Employees (SGEs) like Elon Musk by swiftly acting on the Warren-Stansbury SGE Ethics Enforcement & Reform (SEER) Act. Those who’d rather obstruct this commonsense check and balance are complicit in DOGE working against Americans’ interests behind closed doors while likely lining their own pockets.
HOW THE TRUMP-MUSK ADMINISTRATION’S DOGE IS HARMING FAMILIES
All across the United States, the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have triggered widespread outrage as their reckless cutting spree endangers the most vulnerable citizens and critical services:
- Health services are in disarray after DOGE moved to cut approximately 10,000 jobs from the Department of Health and Human Services. Former FDA Commissioner Robert Califf called it “a dark day for public health,” as divisions tackling HIV, improving minority health, reducing gun violence, and responding to infectious disease outbreaks have been gutted. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. even admitted that about a fifth of these layoffs were mistakes that will require reinstatement.
- DOGE terminated a contract responsible for inspecting low-income housing for gas leaks, faulty smoke detectors, and other life-threatening deficiencies. This sudden cancellation could threaten thousands of inspections, including approximately 250 “priority” properties where significant safety issues were previously identified. Housing experts remain unclear about how these critical safety inspections, intended to protect tenants, will be conducted moving forward.
- Millions of children worldwide are at risk after DOGE canceled millions of dollars in grants administered by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, which had helped combat slave labor and reduce the number of child laborers by 78 million over the last two decades. Reid Maki, coordinator of the Child Labor Coalition, warned: “We’re looking at an explosion of child labor” as a result of these cuts.
SOCIAL CONTENT TO LIFT
- Frank Pallone Jr.: USDA is now halting the delivery of 150,000 lbs of food to the Fulfill Food Bank in Monmouth County. These are the real life impacts of Trump and Musk’s DOGE: less food for hungry people and more money for billionaires.
- Rep. Jimmy Panetta: Food banks in all 58 counties across California are feeling the impact of this administration’s food program freeze with over 300 shipments canceled or paused. I’m standing up for our farmers, our families, and our food security.
- Rep. Dina Titus: Trump isn’t focused on making our cost-of-living cheaper. Instead @POTUS wants to pay for tax cuts for his billionaire friends while gutting programs like @SocialSecurity. DOGE has removed 7,000 employees from the Social Security Administration, and the website has already crashed. The Trump-Musk Administration is making it harder for people like seniors and disabled veterans to get the benefits they have earned.
- Rep. Stacey Plaskett: Where are the so-called DOGE savings?? You won’t see them. Why?? Because they’re not for the average American.
- Rep. Stephen F. Lynch: Ranking Member @GerryConnolly and I are leading an investigation into Elon Musk’s conflict of interest as a Special Government Employee in violation of federal ethics rules. As Elon Musk and his DOGE lackeys gut and terminate vital programs and services Americans rely on such as Social Security, Medicare, Veteran healthcare and benefits, and other vital government services, he has conveniently ignored the potential abuse stemming from his own companies’ contracts worth billions in taxpayer dollars. @OversightDems
- Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand: Here’s the information Elon Musk and his DOGE buddies want to know about you. They’re trying to violate the privacy of every American in this country.
