Consumer Protections, Education On the Line as Republican Lawmakers Slash Funding to Offset Billionaire Tax Cuts

This week in Congress: House Republicans shill for the rich on the backs of everyday Americans
WASHINGTON, DC — This week, House Financial Services (HFSC) and Education and Workforce Committee (EWC) Republicans pushed through hundreds of billions in funding cuts for critical consumer protection and education programs millions rely on in order to pay for tax cuts for themselves, billionaire donors, and corporations.
What’s at stake: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)—an agency designed to protect consumers and has put $20 billion back into the pockets of Americans—could lose up to 70% of its budget to congressional Republican cuts, while millions of Americans could lose access to $330 billion in funding for programs they rely on to pay for school at every level.
A quick rundown of lawmakers like Rep. Summer Lee (PA-12), Rep. Jahana Hayes (CT-05), and Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-06) responding to Republicans’ most egregious claims about education funding:
- @RepSummerLee: This fight is personal. Republicans’ plan would punish first-gen students, working-class families, and Black women—the very people who’ve fought hardest to chase their dreams. [FULL CLIP]
- @RepLucyMcBath: Republicans tell Americans to sacrifice—while they trade stocks, forgive their own loans, and block help for working families trying to get ahead. [FULL CLIP]
- @RepJahanaHayes taught for 10 years. She knows what’s at stake. Congressional Republicans talk a big game about “supporting teachers”—then block the debt relief teachers count on to stay in the classroom. [FULL CLIP]
And Rep. Maxine Waters (CA-43), Rep. Nydia Velazquez (NY-07), and Rep. Sean Casten (IL-06) making it clear that cutting 70% of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) budget—an agency designed to protect consumers and has put $20 billion back into the pockets of Americans—is unacceptable.
- While Republicans dodge their constituents, @RepMaxineWaters is facing hers—and they’re furious. Trump’s economic chaos is hitting home, and people are fed up. [FULL CLIP]
- You can’t grow the economy by cutting revenue and dismantling oversight. @RepCasten called out Congressional Republicans for pretending this tax plan is “fiscally responsible” while it guts protections and enriches billionaires. [FULL CLIP]
- The CFPB protects consumers. So why are Trump, Musk, and House Republicans slashing its budget by 70%? @NydiaVelazquez says it’s simple: because it works—and they hate that it holds powerful players accountable. [FULL CLIP]
