POLITICO: “A coalition of 21 Republican attorneys general on Wednesday blasted the Biden administration’s interpretation of Title IX, which now also prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation” 

Included in the coalition of 21 conservative attorneys general are several of Accountable.US’ “Enemies of Progress” 

Accountable.US recently released a report outlining conservative AGs’ history of attacking and discriminating against the LGBTQ community 

Washington, D.C. — A coalition of 21 conservative attorneys general wrote a letter to the Biden administration attacking its Title IX guidance that aims to protect American students from discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation, POLITICO reports. Accountable.US released the following statement: 

“Conservative attorneys general are using legal jargon to cloak what they really want: free reign to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Students deserve to learn in a safe environment where their identities are respected, not used as props in a conservative culture war.” 

According to the letter, these attorneys general take issue with the “abrupt pendulum swing” from the Trump administration — which consistently sought new ways to discriminate against the LGBTQ community — to the Biden administration, which recognizes the need to protect the LGBTQ community under the law. They also continued their attacks against transgender youth, claiming that forcing people to refer to transgender students by the pronouns they identify with is unconstitutional and that this discrimination is protected under the First Amendment. 

Many of these attorneys general have been identified as “Enemies of Progress” in a new campaign launched by government watchdog Accountable.US. The campaign targets ultra-conservative attorneys general across the United States who are trying to obstruct the Biden administration’s actions in court with frivolous lawsuits that prevent progress on key issues our country is facing. Many have a history of targeting the LGBTQ community, like opposing marriage equality, preventing LGBTQ parents from adopting, and working to ban transgender athletes from participating in sports.
