Washington, D.C. — In response to breaking news that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is bailing on its support for the Senate-passed bipartisan infrastructure bill “just hours” after reports that House Republicans had kicked the Chamber off of its reconciliation ‘strategy calls’, government watchdog Accountable.US president Kyle Herrig issued the following statement:

“This was a predictable about-face for the U.S. Chamber that has shown all they really care about is keeping billion-dollar corporations from paying their fair share. All the Chamber’s public posturing about the need for rebuilding the nation’s crumbling infrastructure was part of a cynical charade to protect industry’s bottom line at all costs. When the rubber met the road, the corporate interests behind the Chamber made their choice: oppose the entirety of the Biden Build Back Better agenda that is hugely popular, a massive job-creator, and cost-reducer for millions of families in order to protect wasteful tax breaks for millionaires and Fortune 500 companies that have never trickled down to anyone else. If anyone was still taking the U.S. Chamber seriously after all they’ve done to undermine democracy and distort the debate over shared responsibility, they can stop now.”
