WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Trump administration reportedly illegally fired two Democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya—a decision that is likely in violation of the constitution. In undermining the FTC’s traditional independence, the Trump administration is continuing its campaign against American consumers. Between a weakened Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and FTC, millions are being exposed to rampant fraud, exploitation, and greed.

Firing Slaughter and Bedoya without cause is illegal and a gift to billionaires and large corporations seeking to dodge oversight. The FTC has been a critical force pushing back against industry interests, and is currently investigating or suing some of the biggest players in the country. Make no mistake: today’s illegal action is only the latest example of Trump and Musk rolling back protections for consumers and propping up predatory practices that raise costs for Americans.”

Today’s attempted firings follow Trump’s campaign to gut consumer protections across the federal government. Earlier this year, Elon Musk’s DOGE took a hatchet to the CFPB, shutting down a lifeline for Americans who have been scammed by big banks and shady financial actors. Trump’s nominee to lead the agency, Jonathan McKernan was celebrated by financial industry lobbyists.
