Buzzfeed: The Wife Of A Senior HHS Official Appeared With Him At An Official Event While Being Paid To Lobby

Washington, DC – Today, Patients Over Pharma released the following statement after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) refused to adequately explain why Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan’s wife was permitted to lobby on behalf of health care clients or why she joined her husband on official government business while lobbying and then deleted the evidence of her presence.

“If there’s nothing wrong with Deputy Secretary Hargan’s wife joining him on official government trips while lobbying on behalf of health care corporations, then why did she delete that tweet right after the story broke?” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Patients Over Pharma. “This is exactly the kind of swampiness that needs to be rooted out of Sec. Azar’s health department so that people can trust that their government is putting patients and their families ahead of drug companies and their profits.”

After the initial story had posted in STAT News, Patients Over Pharma released a statement questioning the ethics of Hargan’s wife’s lobbying, which included a link to one of her tweets showing her at an official government event with her husband during the time period she was registered to lobby on behalf of health care clients with interests in HHS policies and decision-making.

The tweet showing her at an official government event while registered to lobby was subsequently deleted (screenshot is below).

In a statement to Buzzfeed, HHS claimed that Emily Hargan happened to be at her husband’s official government event as part of her “personal travel plans,” but they didn’t explain why she then deleted it and they didn’t deny that her presence at the event while she was registered to lobby was improper.
