WASHINGTON, DC — As part of its ongoing effort to crack down on junk fees, the Biden-Harris administration today unveiled a new rule banning airlines from charging families for adjacent seating. The rule would allow parents of children 13 years and younger to sit adjacent to their children, and require airlines to disclose the right to fee-free family seating.

Parents shouldn’t have to pay extra just to sit with their children, but unfortunately greedy junk fees have become the industry norm. By adding transparency and accountability to the ticket booking process, the Biden-Harris administration is putting money back into the pockets of American families and making sure they can travel without the burden of hidden fees and unfair practices. It’s about time airlines prioritize customer service, and this Biden-Harris policy is a huge step in the right direction.”

Earlier this week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked the Biden-Harris administration’s final rule requiring carriers to be transparent about bagging, flight change, and cancellation charges—rulemaking that would save consumers half a billion dollars a year. The ruling is the latest in a series of anti-consumer, industry-friendly decisions for predatory lenders, self-interested Wall Street hedge fund managers, discriminatory big banks, and greedy credit card issuers.
