WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, the American Petroleum Institute (API) held its annual “State of American Energy” event to flood the press with lies and equip their congressional allies with dubious arguments to utilize when pushing Big Oil’s agenda. The event comes on the heels of the House majority taking power who just this week appointed 20 members to the influential House Natural Resources Committee that received a combined $3.8 million in campaign donations from the oil and gas industry.

Throughout the address, API CEO Mike Sommers attempted to blame Biden’s policy agenda as a scapegoat for the industry’s ruthless price gouging of consumers. Sommers even tried to greenwash the industry’s reckless and hazardous pollution that threatens communities across the country. In response, Accountable.US released the following statement and report debunking API’s patently false rhetoric.

Now that API’s loyal cronies are in charge of the House, Big Oil wasted no time fabricating dubious talking points to shield the MAGA majority from political scrutiny as they carry water for industry executives in the people's house. API fearmongers and lies because they know their true agenda of exploiting public lands, lining the pockets of wealthy shareholders at the expense of working families, and furthering our reliance on dirty fuels that pollute our air with climate-warming emissions is deeply unpopular with the American people.''
