Washington, D.C. — Today, government watchdog Accountable.US announced that Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has been identified as an enemy of progress due to his opposition to key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all. The group launched a new campaign, “Enemies of Progress,” outlining the potential threats that Marshall and other Republican attorneys general around the country pose to advancements that support all Americans. Accountable.US also released its first report highlighting how Marshall and others are using their positions as top law enforcement officials to defend their campaign donors, not their constituents.

“Instead of fighting for their best interests, Attorney General Marshall is spending Alabamians’ taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits against the Biden administration on behalf of his special interest donors,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Marshall heads one of the key organizations behind the rally leading to the deadly Capitol riot, and yet pretends he bears no responsibility for the massive damage caused to our democracy that day. Someone at the helm of the organization that incited sedition has no credibility to now sue the government it tried to overthrow. It’s like a burglar suing a homeowner for injuries sustained during a break in.”

This new campaign exposes some of the worst offenders who have proven to be working towards one goal in their capacity as their state’s top law enforcement official: to slow down or prevent progress on some of the country’s toughest issues. Marshall is joined by another 12 “Enemies of Progress” including the attorneys general from Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and West Virginia. In the coming days, the effort will be amplified with paid ads in key states, including on social media and traditional media websites.

“Poll after poll shows the public supports the Biden agenda, and any obstructionist who would abuse their power to protect profits of greedy special interests is an enemy of progress,” added Herrig.

Here’s more on how Attorney General Marshall was selected as a top “Enemy of Progress”:

  • Served as Head of Organization that Incited the January 6th Capitol Insurrection: Marshall is chairman of RAGA’s Rule of Law Defense Fund, which helped organize and promote the January 6th “Stop the Steal” rally that led to a violent and deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

  • Called the Police Shooting of an Innocent Black Man “Justified”: Marshall’s office took over the investigation of the shooting of E.J. Bradford, an innocent Black man who was shot by a police officer after being mistaken as the perpetrator of a mall shooting. Marshall later ruled that the police officer was “justified” in shooting Bradford, a decision widely criticized by civil rights groups.

  • Defended Racist Monuments: Marshall told local cities and municipalities that their efforts to remove symbols of hate and racism were steps toward “utter lawlessness” and only the “political winds of the moment.”

  • Led the Charge Against the Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment: Marshall joined two others states in filing a lawsuit seeking to block the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, arguing that the amendment would promote the “far-left agenda” of protecting access to reproductive health care and “lawsuits over single-sex accommodations.”
