Accountable.US Statement on Trump-Appointed Judges Blocking “Click-to-Cancel” Consumer Protection Rule
Decision comes on the heels of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill stripping a range of consumer protections
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, a three-judge panel on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, which included two judges appointed by President Donald Trump, ruled to vacate the Federal Trade Commission’s “Click-to-Cancel” rule, requiring businesses to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up for one. The ruling comes as the policy was set to take effect next week, and just days after the Trump Administration rolled back additional consumer protections by slashing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s budget by nearly 50 percent. In response, Accountable.US Executive Director Tony Carrk released the following statement:
Trump-appointed judges just made it easier for corporations to take advantage of consumers. The Eighth Circuit’s ruling lets special interests makes it harder for regular Americans to cancel subscriptions and memberships for services they no longer want. It’s a waste of families’ time and money. And it comes just days after Donald Trump and his allies in Congress passed legislation to tear down consumer protections and hollow out the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Once again, Trump and his allies are betraying working families to do the bidding of corporate special interests’ and their bottom lines.”
Since taking office in January, Trump’s attacks against the CFPB—including cutting back on regulations around bank fees, enforcement actions, and a series of dropped lawsuits—have cost American families $18 billion.
