Merrick Garland, President Biden’s pick to run the Justice Department, has finally been confirmed in the Senate after numerous roadblocks from Senate Republicans 

Senators like Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) used Senate procedure to slow the process down, leaving the Justice Department without its top law enforcement official for months

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Accountable Senate War Room released the following statement on the successful confirmation of Merrick Garland as U.S. attorney general following months of Republican obstruction:

“Senate Republicans’ obstruction tactics have once again failed against President Biden’s slate of crisis-tested nominees,” said Mairead Lynn, spokesperson for Accountable Senate War Room. “Republican senators like Tom Cotton, who threw political temper tantrums to delay or obstruct Garland’s confirmation, did so knowing their tactics would fail, purposely delaying the confirmation of the country’s top law enforcement official after members of their own party helped incite a violent insurrection at our nation’s Capitol. These tactics fell flat — as we knew they would — because Merrick Garland is a proven leader and advocate who’s ready to get to work for the American people in pursuit of justice. We congratulate Attorney General Garland and the Biden administration, and look forward to the return of transparency and honesty to the Justice Department after four years of the Trump administration.” 

The Biden administration has faced unprecedented obstruction from Senate Republicans dead-set on dragging the Cabinet nominations process out as much as possible. Last month, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) refused to schedule a timely confirmation hearing for Garland, using his Ranking Member status on the Senate Judiciary committee to further delay the top law enforcement official from taking office. Just days ago, Senator Tom Cotton blocked efforts to expedite the confirmation process for Garland, knowing his efforts would fail considering Senate Republicans like Minority Leader McConnell (R-KY) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) already signaled their support for the nominee.
