WASHINGTON, D.C. — With less than 24 hours left in the Trump presidency, the United States today reached 400,000 deaths from COVID-19: a final horrific marker that puts a cap on his administration’s mismanaged, incompetent pandemic response.

For weeks, as coronavirus cases have spiked and the economy has continued to struggle, President Trump and his Senate allies have turned their backs on the American people to focus on obstructing democracy. They have sown disinformation about the November election results, delayed the process for President-elect Biden to have his Cabinet nominees at work on Day One, and encouraged the violent insurrectionists who attacked the U.S. Capitol — all while the pandemic reached previously unthinkable heights.

“After 400,000 Americans have lost their lives, the Biden administration is taking over a nation in mourning,” said Kyle Herrig, president of government watchdog Accountable.US. “President Trump spent the pandemic enriching his friends and allies as Americans suffered widespread tragedy and loss. It was an utter failure. It’s time for an administration that prioritizes public health and science over giving handouts to special interests and further enriching the already-wealthy.”
